Lemon Verbena tea

Writer: Lizzie RossLizzie Ross

If you’ve ever wanted to try your hand at growing herbs for tea, this one’s a great choice.

Lemon Verbena loves warm, sunny conditions, so it’s perfect for a sunny windowsill or garden. It prefers full sun, so try to give it at least six hours of direct sunlight a day. You’ll want to plant it in well-draining soil—this herb doesn’t like to sit in water. It thrives in a warm climate, so if you're in a cooler area, it might be best to grow it in a pot that you can bring indoors during the colder months. Mine is in the tea garden in the ground but I will lift it and bring it inside before the frost gets it.

Watering is important, but don’t overdo it. Let the soil dry out a little between waterings, and always make sure the pot has good drainage. Lemon Verbena can get pretty big, so if you’re growing it in a pot, make sure it has enough space to spread out. You’ll know it’s happy when you start smelling that amazing lemon fragrance every time you brush past it.

A wonderfully refreshing herb that’s perfect for unwinding after a long day—Lemon Verbena. In French, it’s called Verveine Citronnelle, which I think sounds just as fresh as it smells.

This herb is a bit special, It's not just your typical lemon flavour. It has a bright, citrusy aroma that’s actually really soothing, without being too tart.

Lemon Verbena is native to South America, and for centuries, people have used it for everything from calming the mind to helping with digestion.

If you’ve never tried it before, trust me, it’s worth it. So easy to brew

Ingredients:

  • 1 tablespoon of dried Lemon Verbena leaves (or 5-6 fresh leaves if you’ve got a plant!)

  • 1 cup of boiling water

  • Optional: Honey or a slice of lemon

Instructions:

  1. Boil some water.

  2. While it’s heating up, place your Lemon Verbena leaves in a teapot or mug.

  3. Once the water’s ready, pour it over the leaves.

  4. Let it steep for about 5 to 7 minutes—this lets all that lovely lemony goodness infuse the water.

  5. After that, strain the leaves, and if you like, add a bit of honey or a slice of lemon for an extra boost.

Perfect for those quiet moments when you need to de-stress or just enjoy a moment of peace.

And you should google dessert recipes for this herb – naughty, but nice.
